Although women's rights and children's rights constitute separate areas of examination, they are also within the scope of family law.

Registered or unregistered life partnerships are also the subject of family law. Registered partnerships are not regulated under Turkish law. There is no right attached to friendship out of wedlock, however, children enjoy equal rights whether born in or out of wedlock.

Issues such as domestic violence, surrogacy, artificial insemination, child abuse and child abduction, which are dealt with within the scope of women's rights or children's rights, are specifically regulated in both international conventions and domestic law.

Within the scope of family law, disputes regarding issues regulated in the Turkish Civil Code and some other special laws are heard in family courts. Family courts are courts of specialization that benefit from the help of people working in the field such as social workers and psychologists. In addition, in the appointment of family court judges, it is preferred to appoint persons with these qualifications, depending on whether they are experts in family law and whether they are married or have children.
